We all have goals we want to achieve. Lose a few pounds, quit smoking, get a better job, exercise more. You want to be healthier or advance in your career or make more money. Maybe you’re putting off doing something you really want because you need to achieve your goal first. Maybe you’re still waiting.
Goals are incredibly important. When you have goals, especially goals that are very specific and measurable, and then add in a good dose of accountability, you have a blueprint for making positive change in your life. But then what?
Have you ever achieved a goal, only to go back to doing what you did before soon afterwards? And then revisit that same goal again because you “failed”, or believe you lacked the willpower or motivation to see it through the first time. I know I have. Or maybe you achieve your goal and it’s not good enough. You still feel something is missing so you set another goal. Or maybe you don’t start toward your goal at all because it’s too big or too hard right now.
You can have the most specific goal, account for all the obstacles, stick with your plan and still struggle once you’ve achieved it. For a very simple reason. You may have made a great plan, but you haven’t connected with the result you want from that plan.
What you are really looking for. The “why” behind your plan.
The next time you set a goal, ask yourself these questions. What’s on the other side of this goal? How will my life be different? What will change? What will stay the same? How will I know I’ve gotten the result I really wanted? What does achieving this goal mean to me? Try to envision yourself in a year. 5 years. Be really specific.
